History of the wine

Zodiac is a limited edition of Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, that originates from an expert selection of the best grapes from the estate’s finest vineyards. A wine of extraordinary character and individuality, which takes advantage of the complexity and diversity of all the soils of the estate.

2017 vintage at Castiglion del Bosco

The hot and dry summer of the 2017 vintage certainly characterized the ripening of the grapes. Compared to other areas of the denomination Castiglion del Bosco was distinguished with varied rains at the beginning of September. This mitigated the summer heat slowed the phenolic ripening especially in the upper part of Capanna. It also allowed to avoid the risk of over-ripening and helped maintaining a good acid level. In Castiglion del Bosco, just like the whole denomination, the harvest began in advance compared to the usual.

Vinification and ageing

Harvest was carried out by hand with aerated 15 kg boxes. The excellent quality of the grapes, enabled a prolonged maceration, which continued after the fermentation phase. Ageing took place in select French oak barrels for 36 months. Alcohol level is 14,5%.

Winemaker tasting notes

“Year of the Dragon Riserva 2017 is a wine of great aromatic intensity. The heat of summer has given structure, energy and great complexity. Thanks to the long aging, notes of licorice and rhubarb stand out and remain present throughout the long sip of this wine. Orange peel and flint complete its olfactory richness. Full and balanced palate with excellent acid retention allowing an elegant and harmonious finish.”

ALICIA FRANCE

Originally from Manchester, Alicia France studied at Newcastle University, graduating with a BA Hons degree in Fine Art in 2016. Her subject of specialization is portraiture. Her style is characterized by a passion for illustrations and fine art prints. Alicia’s interest is highly focused on the use of color and how that can evoke emotion and personality in a piece. This has been a great focal point in the design of the label dedicated to the Year of the Dragon. Passionate about traditional Oriental art, Alicia painted this symbolic creature using colors, illustrations, and perspective characteristic of Chinese art and culture, while still managing to give it incredible depth. The artist incorporated native Montalcino plants into the anatomy of the Dragon itself: oak, beech and vine leaves are a tribute to the landscape of Castiglion Del Bosco.
